The LD-4255VX is focused on energy efficiency, the ad campaigns for the television promote that it uses less energy than a 100 Watt light bulb. The 42" is LED edge-lit and features a 1080p, 120Hz panel.
Picture And Viewing Features
The 1080p panel features a 120Hz refresh rate to combat motion blur and judder. TO lower energy use the LED edge lighting uses an auto dimming feature to adapt the brightness to the room lighting, we generally caution against leaving features like this on as they usually represent a compromise to picture quality.
Appearance
At 2.14" deep the LD-4255VX is quite a bit thicker than most edge lit LED televisions. The panel is surrounded by a glossy, piano black bezel that is about 1.5" on the top and sides and another inch thicker at the bottom. The included table stand matches the television's bezel.

47" BLACK CRYSTAL LED TV
BlackCrystal is the name JVC is using for their flagship line of LED back lit LCD televisions, the BlackCrystal E-LED line has the same features as the normal BlackCrystal televisions but uses LED edge lighting for a slimmer depth. With "CrystalMotion" 120Hz processing and many of the features the JLE47BC3001 has lots of bells and whistles yet still comes in at a value price.
Picture And Viewing Features
The BlackCrystal series televisions have LED back lighting and 120Hz processing that JVC is calling CrystalMotion. It also features a color boosting technology named CrystalColor that will probably appeal to viewer who like a more saturated look. It has an auto diming mode for energy savings and a game mode that bypasses the picture processing to virtually eliminate input lag when playing games.
Appearance
The JLE47BC3001 has a glossy black bezel surrounding the screen and a lighter colored strip along the bottom. The E in E-LED means the TV is LED edge lit instead of LED back lit, this cuts over an inch off the overall depth of the television.
Internet Applications And Connectivity
The JLE47BC3001 does not feature internet connectivity.

Picture Quality
The LED edge lit 55LM6700 impressed us with both it's color and black level performance. Colors were bold but still realistic even on the standard setting prior to professional calibration. The picture handled warm interior and exterior scenes and dark scenes showed impressive contrast and detail. It did not have the oversaturated, other-wordly look of some LED televisions and we found just about everything we saw on it to be enjoyable to look at.
TruMotion 120Hz
The 55LM6700 uses LG's 120Hz TruMotion, after much testing, we recommend locating this feature in the settings, tuning to the User setting and changing the Judder Reduction component completely off to 0, and Motion Blur at level 9 with the exception of sports programming or fast action in broadcast programming for which the feature actually adds quality. This tradeoff will produce lots of jerky judder but it's worth it.
Side Angle Viewing
Side angle viewing quality is an impressive area of performance for the LG 55L6700. It is much better than most of it's LED backlit and LCD competition even though there is still no comparison to plasma TVs in this area. Contrast remains solid up until about 35 degrees off center – which is a good result.
Appearance
The LG 55LM6700 also has the modernistic avante-garde design that leaves nothing but the picture image in front of you. That's due to the .2" (5mm) depth and virtually no frame. You will not have to worry about reflection from the TV bezel – something that has annoyed us especially from black gloss bezels of the past. We hate to mention another manufacturer, but it's similar though less deep to the D8000 series LED Televisions by Samsung last year.
Internet Applications And Connectivity
LG's Smart TV suite is also available on the 55LM6700 and includes the more than 1000 Apps the company now has along with the typical premium content channels some paid and some unpaid like Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, MLB.tv, Facebook and Twitter. It's overall a very complete solution and enables lots of play time with unusual little Apps that users may or may not find worth the 99 cents to $2.99 that they usually cost.
Magic Wand Remote
Included with the 55LM6700 is LG's innovative Magic Remote, also called the Magic Wand Remote. This secondary remotes operates using motion control. To interact with your TV you point the remote at the screen and move a crosshair with you wrist to select items on the menus or in the Smart TV suite. We think it's a fantastic little gadget and are glad to see it being included in more of LG's series in 2012.
Gaming
When 2 people play a game in the same room on the same TV they are oftne forced to use split screen, the TV screen is split in half horizontally or vertically and each player not only gets a smaller view of the game, sometimes important screen area is cut off. The 55LM6700's Dual Play technology utilizes the Cinema 3D to display both screens at the same time on the whole screen. Each player wears a different set of polarized glasses and only sees their game on the full screen. This is a huge upgrade from only looking at part of the screen.
Picture Quality
The 60LM9600 has very impressive picture quality with saturated blacks and eye popping whites and brightness. This is due in part to the Nano full array local dimming but also the internal video board de-interlacing and processing. The TV is of course 1080P and we note that the beautiful screen panel with its low luster showed excellent color reproduction. One area that LG has not shied away from with these its LED offerings is side angle viewing quality in which it exceeds the other manufacturers. Contrast degrades slightly at around 35 degrees off center but much less than other LED TVs. One negative trait that we noticed is a slight edge blurring. Images are not as crisp at the edges once some of the annoying edge enhancement features are turned off. We do however recommend leaving the Sharpness setting on this TV at 70% to offset the issue.
Black Level
Black levels are excellent on the LM9600 as evidenced by the top and bottom black bars framing 16:9 images. They appear inky and rich and do a good job of not oversaturating dark shadow detail.
Cinema 3D (Passive 3D)
LG has really attacked the advertising hard with their 3D Cinema claims. Their campaign reads that, "In 3D tests, 4 out of 5 people choose LG Cinema 3D over Samsung and Sony for best color." Well first will say that in our testing of the LM9600 LG's 3D color was very good. It's got a nice realism to it. Color hues are very nice in both 3D and non-3D. I will even go as far as to say they look better than Sony or Samsungs. But color is only one component of testing. Image edges are, as stated, fuzzier with the LG picture image with or without 3D. There is a softness to the picture that is not crisp. And depth appearance with 3D signals is not as significant – all very important aspects of 3D picture quality. The 3D passive imagery is good in our opinion, just dont be fooled by a partially misleading claim.
TruMotion 480Hz
LG uses a scanning backlight technology in the 60LM9600 along with local dimming to create a faster refresh rate of 480Hz by using a superfast on and off sequence in the LED backlight. This is combined with the 240Hz rate of the TV to enable the TV to test much faster in fast motion image tests. That's the ultimate benefit of a faster refresh rate – perceived or real. It smooths out side to side panning and it takes away motion blur from fast moving or rapidly changing images.
LG has some of the best calibrated picture settings in the TV arena. We found the Standard picture setting on the 60LM9600 very tough to compete with even with our calibrated picture settings. This is especially true of lowly standard definition picture images, so we do not hesitate to recommend this setting especially for brightly lit rooms with lots of incoming ambient light.
Appearance
The 60LM9600 receives the ultra thin 5mm or .2" bezel width for the minimalist modern look that today's manufacturers strive for. Why do we need OLED TV technology when the screens are already getting this thin without OLEDs? Anyway, all you see is what's on the screen which is cool. As well, the frame of the TV is virtually invisible – almost non-existent to the eye. It's built to optimize the TVs screen image while giving it a window type effect.
Internet Applications And Connectivity

The LG Smart TV Dashboard showing apps on the 60LM9600
LG touts its Smart TV function in the LM9600 as being a crowd favorite. It is very complete and getting better. But essentially it offers about the same options as most other TV companies such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, MLB.tv, social networking site hookup to Facebook and Twitter, and lots of kitschy little Apps like Boing, Boing, Fruit Puzzle, Paint, Agent Sudoku to name just a few. The viewer can see their current screen programming in a small upper left window while viewing the Internet TV choices.
Included in the LM9600 is a full web browser which is one of our favorite features in today's TVs. It's not only useful to be able to watch free programming, but also to do rapid searches of the web for various things when you thing of them (while watching the TV). You never have to leave the couch. The magic motion remote control makes search much faster and easier.
Magic Wand Remote
One area where the LG 60LM9600 has the competition beat is its impressive and fun-to-use Magic Wand Remote control which enables users to point and drag the curser before clicking to make selections. This speeds up on-screen keyboard typing on the 3D compatible LG TVs considerably. The main benefit is when web browsing, but it also helps with Apps. 2012 adds the new voice recognition function to the remote control as well though it does not speed up typing or browsing like the point and drag function does.
Gaming
When 2 people play a game in the same room on the same TV they are oftne forced to use split screen, the TV screen is split in half horizontally or vertically and each player not only gets a smaller view of the game, sometimes important screen area is cut off. LG's Dual Play technology utilizes the Cinema 3D to display both screens at the same time on the whole screen. Each player wears a different set of polarized glasses and only sees their game on the full screen. This is a huge upgrade from only looking at part of the screen.
Picture And Viewing Features

Picture Gallery
LG may have little competition in the large LCD TV category. Not many of the other manufacturers seem interested in competing for this value oriented space.
Everyone is on the the latest and greatest 3D TVs and LED TVs, but dont underestimate some of these excellent little LCD TVs for delivering the best value (along with plasma) in the marketplace. From past reviews and viewing at CES we know that this TV has a strong picture performance
On of the highlight features of this 1080p full high definition LCD TV is the 120Hz TruMotion feature that increases the refresh rate from 60Hz to 120Hz for reduction of judder and jerky effects from fast motion and camera panning. It's an effective tool for sports programming but, we've advised users in the past to turn off the 120/240Hz feature when watching film and broadcast based video content, and our sentiments remain the same. It introduces too many unnatural artifacts. After doing so however there are some very nice picture attributes to this TV including good black levels, natural beautiful colors, and plenty of dark shadow detail.
Viewing angle is usually somewhat impaired and contrast begins to degrade at around 30 degrees off center. But colors are crisp and not oversaturated like many LED TVs.
The picture is not as bright as an LED (thank goodness) that's cranked way up in contrast, but provides plenty of brightness and contrast for 90% of viewing content.
One recent past LG LCD TV received an 93.5 picture rating and editors choice award from us. The picture on some of these LCDs is usually more consistent and uniform with even higher end LED TVs. And for the price they become very compelling offerings as they are cheaper to produce than newer LED backed LCD TVs.
Appearance
Appearance is not a focal point for these new LCD TVs as they give way to LED backlit LCDs in the aesthetic department. The plastic black slightly brushed gloss framing bezel is not bad looking - has slightly sloped edges and is about 2" in width all the way around the screen. Panel depth measures around 2.5 to 3".
Internet Applications And Connectivity
The LK520 series does not have LG's improved SmartTV functionality for Internet TV. However, LG does have a SmartTV upgrader device called the ST600 Smart TV Upgrader which would allow you to receive all of LG's new Internet TV features. It is sold seperately.

Reviewers: Jack Burden
Date: Summer 2011
LG introduced a line of passive 3D TV's at the 2011 Consumer Electronics show. Available in 4 screen sizes the LW6500 series are LED backlit LCD screens. The panel is made using LG's FPR (Film-type Patterned Retarder) panel that is said to better focus the separate images being fed to the left and right eye. Passive 3D technology means the LW6500's will use polarized 3D glasses rather than the active shutter glasses used most 2010 3D TVs. These passive glasses require no batteries, weigh less and are far less expensive compared to their active counterparts.

- Glare from Ambient Room Light/ Non-Clear Coat Screen
- Does not include Magic Wand
- At times Dark Shadow detail not great
HD Picture Quality: 8.5/10
LG is touting their new FPR panel as the first to 3D panel receive a "Flicker Free Certification" from Intertek and TÜV. The 55LW6500 has another feature called "3D Light Boost" that uses a thin film over the panel to boost the brightness of 3D images. This is intended the counter the darkening effect of wearing 3D glasses to watch TV. From our viewing, this did indeed help present a better 3D image than the passive models without the light boost. Other notable picture features are Full HD 3D 1080p resolution, 240Hz Smooth Motion processing, LED local dimming and 2D to 3D conversion.

A vibrant shot from the 3D Blu Ray, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs shows rich colors clarity
3D TV Viewing: One of the great things about this TV is that it comes with 4 sets of passive 3D glasses (LGAG-P110) in the box. Colors and animation are vivid and of course, there is no flashing or flicker from the passive glasses to distract the viewer. The only drawback was some blurring in the bottom right and left corners of the screen. The 2D to 3D conversion feature is like most, not really good enough to want to use it.
Features Rating: 8.5/10Standard Definition Picture Quality: 8/10

LG Apps choices in the Netcast/SmartTV suite
Appearance: The slim LW6500 has a slim black bezel and a thin clear acrylic edge. The inlcuded stand has a clear neck and a slightly rounded top for a sleek, modern look.

There is an upgraded Picture Wizard II in the LW5700 which allows for basic calibration tools to allow users to adjust the 5 basic settings depending upon ambient room light. It's an interesting and somewhat useful feature that we have not encountered elsewhere.
Inputs: 4 HDMI inputs and USB 2.0 access, 2 component, 2 Composite, Ethernet, and a 15 pin D-sub computer input rounds out an ample offering. There are included breakout cables for one set of component and composite inputs.
Value Rating: 8/10
At around $3499 from authorized retailers the 65LW6500 presents good value at it's massive size. It's a good looking TV with extensive internet options, the excellent magic wand remote and LG's Cinema 3D passive 3D. Competition is this category comes from the 64 and 65 inch plasmas from Panasonic and Samsung.

In late 2010 LG announced a new series of of televisions that they are calling NANO FULL LED TVs, this designation stems from the new type of backlighting found in these televisions. Using a thin film printed with a special light distribution pattern the NANO FULL LED TVs spread the LED backlighting more evenly to provide a screen with none of the hotspots or uneven lighting that is often found on edge lit LED/LCD televisions.
The NANO FULL LED 55LW9800 features a smoother picture thanks to true back lighting rather than edge lighting and full array local dimming with over 200 dimming zones.
The LW9800 of NANO FULL LED televisions is a step up from the other LED TV series and feature 3D compatibility, TruMotion 480Hz refresh rate, and sub 1 inch depth. The new backlighting scheme provides for local dimming and when combined with LG's Micro Pixel Control technology should offer enhanced black levels and contrast. The LW9800 series is also THX certified.
Appearance
This super attractive TV has the a matte finish frame and super thin .8" panel depth. The bezel framing width of the LW9800 is super thin at around .5". The outer edges of the LW9800 are silver and this is only LG LED with a silver edge finish. The overall appearance is striking.
Internet Applications And Connectivity
The new SmartTV options include currently around 120 Internet Apps with 20 of those being premium services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon VOD. It has a special gaming app called I-play which is effective for gamers. The SmartTV function has a full web browswer through a proprietary LG platform and Plex platform.
Standout Features
One important upgrade to this TV is the manipulated 480Hz TruMotion refresh rate. LG was unable to tell us whether this is a true 480Hz or a manipulated 240Hz panel. The TruMotion Hz rate feature effectiveness has been good in the area of decreasing judder, but poor in the arena of providing a better viewing experience with film and broadcast based material. We've recommended turning it off in the past, but we're always willing to give it another shot.
Nano technology is new to LED TVs and introduced on the LW9800 as one of the prominent features. LG terms the feature, NANO Full LED, and the benefits are a super thin screen, finer detail in the imagery, and control over many more zones with true LED backlit (not edge lit) local dimming - allowing for higher resolution per eye during 3D viewing. Purportedly, the LW9800 NANO film screen panel has 288 zones of local dimming capability. The TV is super thin at only .8" depth. It does not have the Infinia glass from past models.
The uber cool Magic Wand remote is included in the high end LG 55LW9800, undeniably useful with the SmartTV (Internet Apps) features. Further, it is 1080p and Wifi ready with the Wifi adapter included in the price. It has 120Hz refresh rate (TruMotion is what the feature is called) and also DLNA certification.
Another new feature in the LW9800 series from LG is the 2D to 3D conversion. While I'm personally not sold on this feature, it looked pretty good in some instances in the LG display at CES.
Magic Wand Remote Control: We reviewed the magic wand remote at CES 2011 and are impressed with its fast flexible functionality. The point and click application was spot on from the IR remote. You can type as fast as you can point and click.
